I just bought an 87 272. I have been a racer/cruiser all of my life, and I will not be satisfied with a poor-performing boat. I am concerned about its ability to point and its potential for "hobby-horsing" in San Fransisco Bay and Delta chop. I also need some info on what size lines are normal for the reef & outhaul systems... I would like some details of how they are normally done.
This seems to be a really nice little boat, and it should fit my needs well, but only if I can make it point with the Catalinas against whom I will be racing..
So, I guess I need an owner's manual. I also need some advice from those who have raced this boat.

Please help!

I don't believe the 272 will point as high as a fin keel Catalina 27....but it will point as well as a wing keel catalina 27....also, the boat doesn't hobby horse at all.....we have sailed ours in kansas for 24 years and we get winds here on the prairie......she likes to be reefed early, but will sail like a dream with a reefed main and headsail....the boat is a dream boat to sail..just like the 302 and 322....we are starting to winterize ours but looked at her in the slip today and she is still one of the best looking boats at our club....Initially we had some trouble with the cruising design furler, but some advice from a racer really helped...i.e. remove the core from the portion of the furling line that goes around the drum....West Marine and other providers are use to removing the core and it makes all the difference in the world..because if the wind is blowing, the furling drum ends up packed too tight with line and the sail doesn't roll all the way in....Pat

Thanks! I will be using a spinnaker, and I would like to know the mast manufacturer or what cars fit the "T" on the front of the mast... I'll run the halyard externally--Does a Catalina "crane" fit the top of the mast? I guess I should hoist and take a look...Would be neat to have a spec sheet, though. I will probably not be installing a furler; so, I will be looking at having a second, foredeck halyard to be able to change jibs without unhanking. I will need to install a Soling rig or alternative for this region on the Delta where we tack incessantly; so, I will need a 90% jib...

the mast manufacturer is Z-Spar. Originally they were in Bristol, Rhode Island. The could be out of business by now or moved overseas.

All Z-Spar fittings are available from US Spar. Located in Florida. I have a 1984 O'Day 272. The mast that you have on your O'Day may be different from my mast. They were very helpful and sent me the parts that I needed on the first crack! USSpars.com
