Plugging a throughull?

The marine head on my H25 is clearly useless because we're in the Chesapeake Bay. She is never going to be a blue water boat. I thought I would remove the head and install a shelf in its place, just high enough to store the porta-potty under, and high enough to put the porta-potty at just the right height for sitting. So what do I do with the throughhull? How does one plug a throughhull safely and effectively? Thanks. Rick

Cap it?

My own boat on Lake Erie has a cap on the overboard pumpout thru-hull. It was done by a former owner because we cannot pump overboard in the Great Lakes. The seacock was removed and a simple pipe cap was screwed on, hopefully with lots of gunk. It has never leaked and is not corroded but then we are in fresh water. I would certainly cap it rather than try to remove the thru-hull and fill the hole.

Here is my plan!

I am going to plug two through hulls this winter and my plan is to; - Remove the thought hull fittings completely. - Screw a cover plate down on top of caulking from the inside. - Fill the recess in the outer surface of the hull with fiberglass. Probably overkill putting the plate on the inside but I know I will sleep better.

Why?

Just close off the valve and put a rubber cap over the barbs with a couple of hose clamps. Save an expense and make your boat more saleable in the future too. If you ever sell the boat (god for bid), the next owner may want to use the thru hulls. Regardless of the fact that you are not going to pump overboard aren't you going to ever need a head. Everyone should be pumping out at a pump out station unless they are outside the legal limts area.

I'm confused

Why go to a porta potti? Use holding tank and keep overboard discharge closed.

H25 Marine Head

Hi guys, Rick, I don't know if this is the original setup or not (I think so), but the way my '78 H25 is set up, there is NO deck fitting- The head pumps into a 6-gallon (decorative?) holding tank, and then the tank is pumped directly overboard. There aren't any other options; It doesn't appear that there was ever a deck fitting, or a place to put one. I posted a question about replacing my head system titled "H25 Head Replacement" in the Smaller Boats forum last November... The advice that I got at that time was based on how I plan to use the boat- If I'm just daysailing with the occasional weekend thrown in, a large (pumpable) porta-head was the way to go. If I plan on spending more time than that aboard, then a full marine system may be worth it. I'm going with the porta-head. I plan to close the seacocks, and put safety wire on them to prevent anyone from accidentally opening them; Then capping them off as Steve Dion recommended. Good luck, and let us know what you decide... --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Hiding the through hulls!

I am icreasing the size of my holding tank, the new holding tank will cover the existing location of my through hulls, so they have to move. In the great lakes we cannot pump overboard, hold onto it and then use a pump out is the only option. Larger holding tanks will allow me to go further betweeen pump outs, and save $$$

Follow up to your questions

1) I plan to keep the marine head in my garage in case I ever (as someone said, "God forbid") see her. 2) There is no holding tank at present. 3) I do 99% day sailing. 4) Comparing the cost and hassle of adding a holding tank plus locating a pump out (which I don't have access to now), VS the porta-potti, I'm not motivated to add a holding tank. 5) After reading all the responses, I am presently debating removing the seacocks and capping the throughhulls, VS keeping & capping the seahulls. Any more suggestions? THANKS so far!!! :)
