The clear (smokey) plexiglass companionway "planks" on my 98 240 have acquired some scratches. Anyone know how to get rid of these? Havent tried anything yet for fear of further scratching. Thanks Bill Welsch s/v Renewal St Louis

Buffing BUT use care!

The companion way plexiglass was badly scratched on my h23 when I got it. I used an orbital buffer (car polisher) and microglaze buffing compound. It did a great job on the minor surface scratches and helped on the deep ones. Here is the caution. Use a CLEAN wool buffing cover (any dirt particles will scratch as you buff) Buffing compounds will not return the surface to "like new" condition. Mine ended up with a very faint haze. You could still see through it fine, but didn't look like a new one. Go over the entire area equally so you don't have uneven spots. Micro glaze compound can be purchased at automotive stores. It is used for minor scratch removal on clear coat car finishes Good Luck and if you mess it up too bad you can always replace it (smile)

lexan

Bill you can use wet sand paper on the hatches suggesting that you use 500 grit as the last but better yet 800 or 1000. At that point, compounding with a clean buffer pad at low speed with for example Finese-it compound by 3-m. Crazy Dave

TRY NOVUS

Bill I am a plastics guru (so-to-say). I would reccomend you use a product called Novus #3 first then step down to #2. Trust me it really works. You will have to use a buffer & a slight amount of pressure with a SOFT wheel. Contact me if you need further help. Russ Kline (aka Cap't Plastics) H25

Take them to a specialist

I think I would consider locating a specialist in the yellow pages. You never know, one might just fix you up for less than you would expect. It's worth a few phone calls.

Toothpaste may do it

For small patch jobs in plastic try toothpaste and a dry soft cloth. Toothpaste has a very fine grit so it will take elbow grease but it is a safe way to fix or mask small scratches. Start on a small area and test it.
