I have several pieces of plexiglass on my boat--ports, hatches, companionway cover, etc. They have some uv degradation and don't look very sharp. I'd like to make them look newer. Does anyone have suggestions as to products and procedures that would restore them to something nearer to what they looked like originally?

Clear or Smoked plexiglas?

I used a product, of course it's greatest characteristic is it's forgettable name, called something like Clear-Vue I think. I used it on the clear ports on my '76 and they came right back to clear. It's a two-part product, the cleaner and then the sealer/protector. You rub the cleaner on, the more liberal you are with it the faster the job goes, and then wipe on the sealer. I got it at Boat US, they don't have it in their catalog, it's sold on a blister card and the bottles themselves are about 3 ounces or so, about 3 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide. The instructions call for clean terry towel, but I discovered that paper towels work just as well. I won't be back to the boat until early next week, if you want, I'll get the name of it then. I've attached a before and after picture.

Mine are smoked, not clear

Thanks, guys. Suppose it'll make any difference if it's smoked plexi?

Plexus

It is a single part spray developed for the aviation industry. I buy it at motorcycle shops. It does a great job filling in small scratches and uv protection on isenglass and plexiglass.

Plexus is good stuff

It is easy to use and keeps the plastic looking good and clear. It isn't a restorer, though. Novus in the three-step works decently, although little will restore something that's already gone. Read Jim Willis' comments in the Expert Forums regarding Island Girl. I would be inclined to try his products. Rick D.

Plastic Restorer

West Marine carries 3M Marine Clear Plastic Restorer. Works great on clear and smoked including scratches. It is one step.
