Hi, this is a 1984 First 38, please give a look at the pictures below, anybody can tell me which one is the speed transducer and which one is the sonar transducer. The right one is hollow, i imagine that you put the real transducer inside. Someone has an idea which company made them and where I can find the transducer inlay for the right one. I have two manuals, in one the right one is the depth sounder in the other one the left one .....! Would be great if someone can help me. I am not interested to connect the speed transducer, but if I can activate the depth transducer it would be great, another question is of course the compatibility with the instruments, some ideas with which this kind of sonar transducer would work? Thanks a lot!!!

I'm guessing the one on the left is the depth sonar and the one on the right with the replacement plug (I believe) is the speed. Speed usually has a plug, so you can remove the wheel when not in use to avoid fouling. No idea of the brand, although most depth transducers are ultimately Airmar.

Hi Veit,

We too have a 1984 BeneteauFirst 38. We have had her for 2.5 years. When we purchased her she had 2 sets of transducers - one set on the starboard side of the keel (probably original to when the boat was first outfitted) connected to DATAMARINE displays and a 2nd set on the starboard side of the keel connected to fairly new RAYMARINE TACKTICK wireless instruments

However, neither of yourtransducers match the ones that we have. Note that DATAMARINE is no longer in business. We removed the TACKTICK instruments last winter since the distance between the top of the mast and the display in the cockpit was too far and we constantly lost the wind speed/wind direction signal while sailing. We then installed wired B&G instruments.

I saw your first posting with the pics. You will have your hands full as you restore/rescue this boat. Good luck!

I think so too

Hi, I think so too, the left one seems the depth transducer, but unfortunately the wires are cutted, i would try to connect them to an instrument to check it.

Hi Doug, thanks for this great information, yes the starboard transducers should be the original ones, I am thinking about to eliminate the speed transducer and use the hole of the original depth transducer to put another one in. I know the Tacktick wireless set, like you I prefer a cable connected sistem. Yes its a quite big project, but I love this boat and I love to work on it. It would be great if you can send me some pictures of yours one! My mail is veitladurner@live.de!
