Nine years ago I replaced all my sanitation hoses with SeaLand hoses. Over the last few months the head area is starting to smell again. I've heard about a test that can be done using a hot rag laid on the hose to detect permeation. Can someone explain this to me?

Also, is a white vinegar rinse something that may work to clean out residue that may be stuck in the hose? If so what are the steps?

Thanks,
Joe Mullee

You'll find the answers to both your questions if...

you search this forum. There's been extensive discussion of both.

However, if the odor is confined only to the head, hoses prob'ly aren't the culprit...permeated hoses tend to stink up all areas they pass through. If the tank discharge is at the bottom of the tank, the tank discharge fitting is usually the first to permeate 'cuz waste sits in it to the level in the tank.

If it's been more than a year since the joker valve in the toilet was replaced, it may be alllowing odor from INSIDE the head discharge hose or the tank to escape into the bowl. Joker valves should be replaced annually as PREVENTIVE maintenance, especiall in manual toilets.

A shower sump in desperate need of cleaning can make the head smell like a sewer...clean it out.

If none of the above helps, get back to me and we'll see what we can do to track down and eliminate your odor.
