I have a play in my edison wheel. Is this something I can tighten or should it go to the yard? This is causing my pilot to constantly correct

On my Watson with Edson wheel steering the adjustments are on the back of the steering quadrant below the cockpit.

I have an Edson wheel on my Catalina 30. When I purchased the boat, it had some play in the wheel and I used it until I got tired of it. Come to find out it was just the key, on the shaft holding the wheel, was worn. I replased it with a new one from Edson and now it is tight. This may be the simplist check first.

I didn't even know that Catalina offered wheel steering on a C 25. Man that must really get in the way withinh the limited space in the cockpit. We used to have an 85 C 25 & with the limited amount of space a tiller would work better. But since U have a wheel, just adjust the tension of the cables running to the steering quadrant can be tightened from the clamps where the cables connect together. The C 25 has an outboard mounted rudder, so I'm not even sure how they would route the steering through the rear transom.

I had play in my steering a few years back.

I didn't have a key, but a 3/16" or so bolt that went through the radial steering linkage and the rudder post. After a while the torque on the rudder caused the bolt and the hole to elongate.

This caused serious slop and resulted in the bolts shearing off. This happened twice.

I redrilled the hole to 3/8 or 1/2"...can't remember now. I also wrapped rudder post with aluminum flashing as a shim. The shim coupled with a bigger bolt eliminated all play and it's been good the last 2 years.

Good luck!
Chris
