Tighten your steering cables...

that might be the problem. However, if when your hauled the bottom of the rudder swings more than an inch or two something is badly worn and parts replacement will be needed. Always secure the helm when anchored or docked because rudder wear can occur even when the boat isn't used.

Rudder post clearance

According to Hunter, the rudder post has a clearance of between 1/16" to 1/8" when new. Depending on your model, you can replace the bearings or use the West Epoxy System if things get really bad.

rudder post play

I do not know the year of your 33. My experience working with a large charter boat fleet is that all the posts on the newer hunters have a LOT of play, even out of the box. If you have one of the goldie Cherubinis, you will need to build up the rudder post bearings. There was no play designed into them. WEST system has some excellent articles on doing this. Send them an e-mail. Their tech. department is really helpful and prompt.

My 1997 h40.5 has almost 1/8" at the bottom

where the rudder exits the hull. I first noticed this in 2003 and immediately talked to the local Hunter dealer in Havre d'Grace, Maryland (where I happened to be located), my own dealer in Mystic, CT, and I posted a message here. The following morning I received a call from Ed Breen at the Hunter factory who saw my HOW posting. All people I spoke to assured me that the play was normal and that I should not be concerned. Nevertheless, I never noticed this play in 1998 when I bought the boat. Now in 2008, the play is the same amount. No worse at all.

In earlier posts I've mentioned a tip from a ...

local marine surveyor regarding rudder play. He told me that one way to reduce the play is to drop the rudder enough to insert a piece of teflon sheet around the lower rudder post that will act as a shim. Most marine repair shops carry sheets of teflon for different repairs. I've never tried this because the rudder play on our boat is still within tolerance. Terry
