Planned obsolecence

I have a YSB 12 and have had a few problems with the oil pump housing, the alternator bracket (broke) and now the exhaust manifold and elbow. Whenever I call the dealer he always talks about my "obsolete" engine and wonders aloud whether the parts are still in production before he looks them up. My YSB seems to be a hearty little engine that is simply suffering from normal wear and tear, and it's range and fuel consumtion are amazing....but this lack of parts thing is spooking me. I've had boats all my life, including an atomic 4 built in the fiftys, a Budda diesel built in the forties and alot of gas 265'ss, 312's, and 292's I can still get parts for. Is there a replacement diesel available from a manufacturer that will support their products for the life cycle of their engines? Keep in mind that it must fit in the space available for my YSB 12 in my Hunter 30 (A few extra horses wouldn't hurt either) . Jim Green

I know how yaa feel

Jim I know how you feel. I'm having some trouble myself. When this ysb12 finally gives up or I do, I will put in a new one from Yanmar. The new one will be just as good for another 20 years or so. What year is your hunter? you can write back to me at co1401@aol.com

Normal life cycle vs planned obsolescence

Your YSB engine was manufactured in 1996 0r 1997. Most parts are still available. You say your dealer mumbles when he looks up the parts. Does he ever come up without them? You would probably have a tougher time getting parts for your 1940's Atomic 4 (first built in 1948) than for the YSB. Also, only Methusala owned that many engines for 23 years each. If you are having troubles finding replacement parts, give Marine Diesel Direct a try. We only mumble if we don't get the part.

Gordon --1976-1979 I think ?

easy mistake to make considering how fast the years go by--- I rebuilt a YSE 12 last year and had absolutly no problem in finding any parts, some where bought through Torresen, and some from a local yanmar dealer, Brands - in ohio. In fact i was surprised how fast things could be had, In an effort to clean up the workshop I threw away my water pump, (The old wrong plastic bag in the dumpster deal) I had a new one for the YSE in about a week- I find most marinas that deal in Yanmar are well stocked and if they don't have it they can get it Fed X rather quickly. You have to be a little realistic in these things and understand that inventory costs money, these little engines don't fall apart every day and you can expect to wait on parts from local distribution. But I have had more problems locating parts for snowblowers that are 10 years old then i have had from Yanmar terry

Thanks Terry

Your years are more accurate than mine. What's in my head doesn't always come out my fingers.
