I want to put an electric bilge pump in my '84 Hunter 25.5, but I do not know where it should go (i.e., how to get access to the bilge).

Bilge

You should find the bilge under the middle of the cabin sole (floor). There are two removable areas of the floor. The longer one (just forward of the entryway ladder) provides access to some keel bolts. The smaller one (just ahead of the other) provides access to the bilge. The bilge is small, but is deeper than the keel bolt section. My 25.5 is not the same year, but yours should be nearly identical to mine.

Forward of the keel bolts?

Thanks. I found the long, narrow (and shallow) area that provides access to the keel bolts, but did not see another panel beyond it - - is it somewhere between that keel bolt access area and the head?

Bilge 2

It is right in front of the keel bolt area. Just pull the keel bolt area cover to the rear a bit and lift on the small pannel edge right in front of it. There is no handle or other grabbing device on mine. There should be a small holly edging in that portion of the floor outlining the bilge opening.

Bilge Acces

On my '84 25.5 there is only the one removeable section of the cabin sole to gain access to the bilge. Up in the forward cabin you can remove the flooring there very easily by removing the screws that hold it down. Although I wouldn't worry too much about water in that section, I've never have had any water there. I also have thought about putting a bilge pump in the boat, but decieded not too since there hardly is ever enough water in the bilge to even activate a pump. The only time I do get enough water in the bilge is when I use the ice box alot.

Bilge 3

For the record, my bilge cover is not held by any screws. It just sits there and can be removed by hands alone.

Bilge Opening

Scott - - I remember only 1 opening in the cabin floor, through which some keel bolts come up; but I believe that it is only a few inches deep - -is that all there is to the bilge?

Why?

Why do you need a bilge pump? Do you have an inboard model that has a packing that slow drips? The bilge access on the centerline with removable cockpit sole boards from the base of the stairs into the cabin to just aft of the bulkhead. The access to the deepest part of the bilge is pretty much under where the dinette table legs hits the sole. In my 84 25.5, there is a drain tube that runs from the aft part of the bilge to the deeper section.

Bilge Access

JFS, Yep that's all there is too it, and my access is setup just as Bill states. I think the Tube that Bill is refering to is the Ice Box drain hose.

BILGE

Bill - - I do not have any sort of leak, just thought I would be extra cautious and put this in while it is still out of the water. For some reason, I thought that the bilge would be a lot bigger than it apparently is. Anyway, thank to you and everyone else for the information.

Bilge pump

If you have an inboard with a dripping packing gland, then a bilge pump would be desirable. But if you have an outboard model 25.5, I'm not sure its necessary. Just keep an eye on the thru-hull that drains the galley sink. If there's a leak at that location, fix it. That's the only spot I can think of that may be a source of water in the cabin (other than leaking windows).
