Allen

My brother is getting married in Newport this 4th of July & I'm thinking of taking the boat to get there from Boston. The marinas are booked, but I was wondering if there are any areas to drop the hook. Anyone know if that's an option? Allen s/v Drambuie Catalina 30, Hull #632

Try Jamestown or Dutch Harbor for moorings

If someone can give you a ride try Dutch Harbor for a mooring. You could also try Jamestown (Connaicut (SP) marina) from there you could dinghy over to Newport if you have a good motor and willing to cross lots of traffic. Wouldn't try the dash in the dark or without a vhf incase you had trouble. Would want the tide t take you out to Block Island Russell S/V Allie Kat

Dutch Harbor

Hi, Allen. Our home is Dutch Harbor, and Russell is right on. The Dutch Harbor Boatyard maintains a couple of transient moorings. And if the moorings are full, there is a good anchoring area North of the mooring field. Check with the Dutch Harbor launch driver for moorings, or for directions if you want to anchor; there is a protected shellfish area somewhere up there, and you want to make sure you drop the hook in the right place. We have never seen that anchoring area full (but July 4th???). From Dutch Harbor it is a 1/2 mile walk to Jamestown Marina where you can catch a ferry to Newport. Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'

You might add...

...that the ferry ride is about 20 mins. Or, if they are going to a wedding (and probably dressed for it, too) then there is always a cab available from Jamestown to Newport via the bridge ($2.00 toll each way). Also, keep in mind that the Dutch Harbor launch service stops at 8:00pm.

Anchoring?

There is an anchorage on the south end of the harbor, but good luck on the 4th. Also, I understand that the holding isn't that great. Newport moorings are first come, first serve. As you approach Newport harbor, shout for Old Port Moorings. They will assign them. They may have one available (last year $35/day). If not, shout for the Newport Harbormaster. They have a few moorings that they rent in a pinch. And the launch service operates there, also.

Ida Lewis Yacht Club...

...accepts reservations. I've never had a problem getting in ther even when they are supposed to be booked. There are always no-shows. ILYC is a beautiful place. Here's a couple of links. The first is Ida Lewis' website the second id RI Nautical Links: http://www.ilyc.org/HP.htm http://www.maineharbors.com/ri/rilnk.htm Oh yeah...the one below is my boat ;-) Cheers, Bob

It all depends on when you are arriving ...

... if you plan on getting in on tues or early wed ... there are two mooring companies that service the main harbor and Brenton Cove ... and your chances are good ... there is anchorage off Ida Lewis to Ft. Adams which should also be available on Tuesday. What size is your boat? After noon on Wed. will be a toss up depending on weather ... We have had fireworks postponed 1 out of 3 years for fog ... although the water is starting to warm up ... last week we had fog 3 days in a row. I'm not sure right now if fireworks are on the 4th ... but may be on another day on the weekend. If it is rainy/foggy I can guarantee you a mooring as all the Up Bay people stay home. If the fireworks are on Thursday and the weather looks great ... then you should arrive on Monday. Dutch Harbor ??? you would be better off driving down. Vic@CaptainVic.com
