After we raised the mast today it was pointed out to me that the side stays could be reversed? We put the stays which come down from the spreaders aft of the lower stays that are on the mast. Problem seems to be the turnbuckles are now just about fully extended. So, my question is this: should the side stays from the spreaders be infront of the lower side stays? Oh! Yes! the new genoa and CDI are up and just about ready for the season! thanks everyone! Denise

Hi Denise. The longer shroud, the one that starts on the mast above the spreader, is located aft of the shorter shroud. I think that is what you are saying. Hate to say this, but is it possible you shortened the forestay too much? How much mask rake do you have now? Anything unusual or problematic with how the backstay attached? You can see the rigging in many of the photo forum pictures pretty clearly.

the forestay was only shortend about 4" everything seems fine. no decernable rake. I'll ck the pic of other 23s.. duh why didnt i think of that? thanks again mike!

H23 Mast Rake
Hey Denise - you missed part of my point - I should have been clearer. The H23 has a fair amount of mast rake designed in. By "fair amount" I've seem other posts reference 6" to 8" as "normal." Recently, there was a thread complaining of too much rake causing excessive weather helm. One suggestion was to loosen the shrouds to allow the forestay to be adjusted to decrease the rake. Sounds like what you have inadvertently achieved! If you really have no rake now, it could explain why the aft stays seem too short.

*yks You mean i did something right for a change? Ok... great.. now how tight is tight enough to keep the CDI and headsail from bending too much? I mean those little wires scare me when we start tightening them up with the turnbuckles. thanks again Mike!
