placement of remote compass for raymarine system

Hi:
My raymarine compass for auto pilot is being effected by alternator out put .
It is located in the under floor area where all the thruhulls are.
i am thinking of moving it and wonder if anyone done this by slicing in longer wire and where would be a good spot to install it.

The auto pilot compass works fine when engine is not running but when engine is started and the alternator kicks in the compass goes about 30 deg out.

Just a question to make sure before you bother - could it be that the voltage drop when the starter is engaged causes the problem? If so, obviously the fix would be easier.

No im sure its the alternator because the compass goes way out of wack when the alternator is charging hard and when it goes to a lower charge rate the compass behaves better.

Use a boy..

Use a hand held boy scout type compass to find a location for the AP compass that is not affected by metals. Sometimes even just a few inches makes a big difference. You can calibrate them and correct for deviation but not electrical gremlins.. If I remember correctly that unit is just a two wire with shield so extending it should be no problem but do use shielded wire. It might actually be bunched up beneath the pedestal so it could be longer than you think..

Fluxgate Compass Location

Hi:

The fluxgate compass should be installed on the bulkhead in the forward bedroom inside the closet on the right. Open the closed door, and then remove the access panel on the right ( 6 screws). Then secure the compass to the bulhead on the right as low as possible. I would NOT lengthen the cable since the longer the cable and the more splices you put into it will cause the cable to become more sensitive to EMI/RFI. Run the wire from the compass to the nav station but behind the couch and not near the keel or any other metal structure. The autopilot computer should be located behind the panel at the nav station.

I have my fluxgate

for my Raymarine system mounted up on top of the mast step in front of the mast in the forward bilge compartment. If the water gets that high, I'll have a more serious problem than worrying about getting it wet.

With two electric bilge pumps, one a backup, a bilge alarm and a manual emergency pump, I doubt it ever happens.

A Raymarine dealer gave the installation his blessing for warranty purposes. We put the computer up high behind the 120 portion of the electric panel. Was able to use the wire kit that came with the Autopilot, so a splice wasn't needed.

I have a 2002 Hunter 410 and have been unable to find the location of the fluxgate compass. It seems like I've looked everywhere so if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

On my 2002 H410 the fluxgate compass is in the forward stateroom under the bed below the aft-most bottom drawer. Hope this helps.

Hi:
I took Ray's advice moved it to the forward cabin closet areas he suggested. Not a big job but havent had a chance to try it yet. I did find the cable was more than long enough to reach this location..
at leas it's far away from alternators and battery cables now..
