Catalina 27 Chesapeake Bay
Ahoy folks, I’m new to the forum and seeking some helpful information. I purchased a 1981 Catalina 27 this year and looking for some ideas or suggestion for a good location to place my batteries. I run with 2 deep cell batteries. I don’t need a starter battery, because I’m only cranking a 2 cylinder diesel engine. It doesn’t take much power to turn it. Anyway, if you are familiar with the Catalina 27 my batteries are under the portside seating of the cockpit. Is this the home most of you have chosen? I prefer to have the weight more a mid-ship and centered. That doesn’t look like an option I will have on this boat.
Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

They are low enoigh that I don't think the weight is significant enough to make a difference. My iossue is that only being 5-8 and with a corresponding arm span, I practically have to stand on my head to reach them.

In my '84 model C27 the batteries are located inside under the port settee, midships and snug as a bug. I prefer them there as I attach an inverter to a third Group 31 battery that I plug back into the shore hookup line, making all my plugs usable while away from dock, and leaving my two primary house batteries isolated for normal use. This way can run just about anything in the boat that I run at dock, except the window unit.

I'm 6'4" so reaching down in there is not an issue for me. Now sleeping in that masive V-burth that would be a challange )

Is your boat of the design that has the dinnet set up to starboard? Mine is the modle with the table folding down from the main bulkhead. There doesn't seem to be enough room to have the batteries under the settee. Do you have them set up end to end running the length of the boat?

I have the traditional setup you have with a sofa on each side. The batteries, I have three, are set end to end and fit perfect and never rock or tip. Two batteries are the regular house batteries and the third is a Group 31 which is isolated for running the house 110 plugs through an inverter. I originally set up the third battery for the parade of lights and found it handy to run TV, fans, minifridge, icemaker, radios, etc.

I should have mentioned, I'm 6'2 and the V-berth is plenty for myself and my spouse. Otherwise the rear quarterberth is awesome for one.

DB, Mine were down in the "well" also. I built a tray and tabbed and epoxied it
underneath the starboard side pilot berth. (traditional interior) 2 AGM's fit perfectly
through the access under the cushion. I also built a new power panel and mounted it
at the forward end of the pilot berth. The bat's fed right up the interior linerl to the switch and into the box. It turned into a very neat arrangement. It also got the friggin panel off of the floor.....

What did you do about ventilation for the batteries?
