Pitting Toe Rail

The toe rail on my 1993 Hunter 28 shows signs of pitting. Does anyone know the cause and what the remedy and repair is?

Steel wool?

Many people have reported that using steel wool on a boat can cause this problem. Tiny particals of it can react with aluminum parts and cause pitting. It is recommended to use bronze wool or synthetic scrubbing pads.
