I have a 'boat load' of pock marks and pits, primarily on the deck surface, but also on the the hull. They're relatively small (~1/8th inch) but there are a lot of them. Should they be filled, sanded and then painted or just sanded smooth and re-geled?

It really depends on how much time and money you want to invest BUT gelcoat would be best

Our boat had hail damage from tennis ball sized hail this spring...the 272 is 26 years old and we did not claim the hail damage on our insurance....there are lots of boats at our club w/o hail damage which tells me the gelcoat /fiberglass layup had voids....the pock marks are small, 1/16 - 1/8 inch, and there are not too many...maybe 10-15 scattered around the deck, definitely from impact of tennis ball sized hail falling in 80-90 mph winds... deck/under portlights, etc. Can I just get gelcoat from Rudy at D & R Marine (O'Day supplier of parts and advice) and fill the voids w/gelcoat.?..will be a fall/spring project....thanks for your advice! Pat

The big question is what is causing the poc marks. Water migration under the gelcoat resulting from a porous gelcoat? Unlike Pat with the hail causing it the problem is likely to resurface. One problem with our older boats is the color change from sunlight. An exact match is nearly impossible but if your eye is good you can mix tints with the base color for a good match. Color matching isn't that difficult with some practice.
