Pirate Ship Theme- Good Idea or Bad?

...when it comes to pirate stuff. No more for me. What's happening to peaceful cruisers is horrifying.

I think it's safe to say that the general consensus is a "Go for it."
It does depend on the boat. Something sleek won't work, I do have other theme ideas for those, though
Gunni, I hear you. Part of my reservations about it came from that particular topic.
However, we are talking about classical pirates and not unemployed Somali fishermen. If I had a small powerboat flying a Jolly Roger (like the real pirates pictured earlier) then, yes, that would be very inappropriate.
Classical pirates are now officially Disney material. Family and stuff. Hannah Montana and Whatnot.

I've had a bit of experience with conspicuous vehicles in the past.
When I was in High School during the late 90's everybody was obsessed with Fast and Furious Japanese Cars, but my Pizza Hut money wouldn't make my Honda fast or furious.
So, I painted green slime dripping from the headlights and had a vinyl shop make me some Ghostbusters decals for the doors.
That car was a hit. Especially cruising around New Orleans during Mardi Gras of 1999. We had the windows down with the theme song cranked up and everybody cheered when we rolled past!
I miss that car...

There is nothing wrong with having some piratical things flying around. I have been known to run Ol' Roger up the spreaders from time to time. Quite a few other sailboats do this. What is really cool is to find a flag that no one else is flying. It is a good conversation starter, especially if you know the history on it.

two things come to mind ... I keep thinking of Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball. (which is also reminding me of my daughter's comment when I was wearing a rather ostentatious shirt that I bought from "Territory Ahead" ... she said "that shirt makes me think of Dumb and Dumber for some reason")
I also think of a Waylon Jennings song that goes:
Someone called us 'outlaws' in some old magazine ... New York sent a posse like I ain't never seen! ... Don't ya think this 'outlaw' bit has done got outta hand? ... Roger is a mix of a Bichon and Licking Machine
I want go get my avatar pic made into a real flag, so while on the boat we can fly the "Jolly" Roger.
He is technically my girlfriends dog (even though I found him and brought him home!). It was her birthday. This was about 3 years ago.
Last year I adopted a 1 year old black Schnoodle (Schnauzer Poodle) and named her Roux (pronounced "Roo"- Roux is the name for Gumbo broth).
So, now we have 2 fluffy dogs. Black and White. Roger is a wimpy Mama's boy, and Roux is a typical fearless, always coming inside covered in leaves, Daddy's girl.
However, I haven't taken Roux sailing yet, but it is proven that Roger loves it.
So, my girlfriend says she understands if I take Roger (her dog) on sailing trips and leave Roux (MY dog) on shore with her.

Unexpected Attention
I owned a 30' pilot schooner out of San Diego. There were many days when I was sailing quietly and suddenly found my bow being cut by lookly-loos. Boats of all kinds would alter course to have a look when I had my gollywobbler set.
It wasn't always welcome and they weren't all courteous.
My dreams have always run the opposite way; Nelson, Aubrey, Hornblower. I see a pirate flag and I think it is my duty to capture or sink her. The flags I fly reflect this, Battle Ensigns and commissioning pennants. (See profile photo albums)

Seen this boat in person
I saw this exact boat near Callao, Va in the 4th of July boat parade. It was an absolute hoot. As I recall there were setting off fireworks to simulate cannons. Way too much entertainment. I recall it was call the "Brown Pearl" or something like that.

Check out "Island Time" at next summer's Rock Hall pirate weekend. It's a two master that rigs out with pirate regalia and is now doing both RH and the HdG Pirate Weekends by invitation.
Mike had several cannons made for black powder use. They make a hellova bang. He could give you some tips on what to look for, if you can wait that long.
