I am new to sailboat ownership but not sailing. I purchased a 1993 Capri 18 and tried stepping the mast for the first time. I had no problem getting the mast up but I am having a problem pinning the furling drum to the front jibstay plate. It is about 1.5" too short to reach. I know it was in place when the previous owners had the boat. I saw this in pictures on the forsale ad. I had the boat picked up and delivered and was not present in the destepping. It has been suggested to me to loosen the side stays and then try pulling the mast farther forward or even using the trailer winch to get additional leverage on the mast. The problem is that the back stay turnbuckles are extended to there fullest extent. I am wondering if there is some additional hardware that is missing that would attach from the furling drum to the jibstay plate. This boat was donated to a nonprofit and I purchased from them. i have no direct contact to the previous owners. I am hoping someone will be able to help with this question.

Thank You!:)

What are you trying to connect to? The stem fitting has a ridge that runs fore/aft with 3 holes; the forestay does not attach to any of those holes. Those are for shackles and blocks. At the forward end of the stem fitting there's a tab that sticks up, at a 90 degree angle to the ridge, angled toward the stern, that has a single hole. That's what the forestay attaches to.

Make sure the forestay turnbuckle is unscrewed almost all the way. Loosening the shrouds may also help but before that, you could try using the jib halyard, and spinnaker halyard if you have one, to pull the mast forward. Clip one on each side of the pulpit and tighten them up hard to bend the mast forward an inch or so. That generally works on my Capri 22.

Without a picture it's hard to tell if something is missing. On my Capri 22 the forestay has a threaded end that goes into a brass turnbuckle. The other side has a threaded T shaped piece of stainless with a U shaped piece over the crossbar of the T. The U has holes for the pin. I line up the holes with one in the tab on the stem fitting, poke the pin through and stick a ring ding in it. Then I adjust the tension on the forestay per manuals/tuning guides.

Do you have the Capri 18/22 manual? I may have a digital copy somewhere that I could post if you need it.

Thanks for identifying the correct location to attach. I will continue working on it.
