I'm currently sailing a sunfish and would like to upgrade. How long has the Picnic been made? Would prefer finding a used one. Are they easy for one to set up and sail?

Which "Picnic" sailboat are you asking about? I assume you mean the Com-Pac built cat boat. There are many used ones available: http://www.sailingtexas.com/cboats99compacpicniccat.html . I am not a fan of the cat rig possibly because I have no experience. Without a jib they certainly are easier to rig and single hand. I have just read that they sail poorly to weather which is the direction I always need to go.

Don't be so fast in writing off a cat boat, particularly the com-pacs. Their unique quick & easy mast raising system on all their cats (14-20') gets you on the water and sailing fast. They are also very well made, stable boats and their Picnic cat and Sunday Cat models provide a lot of room for family and friends. As you asked about the Picnic Cat I am assuming you are looking for a daysailer as opposed to a 'sports boat'. There is an amazing range of other 14-16' boats out there. Check out the products from Hunter (146 & 15), Precision (15, 16), Catalina (14.2, expo) plus lots of other good daysailers that you'll find on the used market even if they are no longer manufactured. What type of sailing are you interested in (are you looking for more room than the sunfish to hold family & friends) and where do you plan to sail your boat (protected waters)?
There seems to be a large used boat market in the USA. When you find the boat that 'stirs your soul' then you have found the one for you.
Good hunting.
