I just had my 306 rated by YRA of San Francisco. The rating is 207. This was was a surprise because the salesman stated 185 when ask during the purchase process. My mother always told me not to trust the salesman! The catalina 30 is rated 190.

A Gift? I think

Now I am not anywhere close to knowing much about the PHRF but I thought the higher the number, the better the handicap. If you stay close to those Catalina's you'll win. If you win, next year you'll be rated at 195

Am not sure, but ...

Am not sure, because I cruise more than race, but the few "fun" races I participate in, even on the same water [Chesapeake Bay], come up with different PHRFs, i.e., I believe there is a sort of "universal" rating, and then "local" ratings ... I am in the Chesapeake, which has different racing conditions than perhaps, say SFO Bay ... And, yes, I am happy when I get the higher number ... My '89 Hunter 30' fractional rig has been rated between 186 and 205. And the races I have participated in, LOWER the PHRF for foresails 150% or greater, including gennakers, drifters, and genoas ... I have had the production 110% Yankee cut jib, and then used my gennaker, so, in the end, that combination hurt me, even tho I placed in the race!

My 306 is standard issue hunter with standard main. Only change is a Gori folding prop and a cruising spin.

Keep your mouth shut

Don't tell anyone. You have a rating 9 points higher than a H290 with 3-blade non-folding prop, and 110 jib. I only get a 198. Sounds like someone screwed up. Count your blessings. Cheers, Palmer
