PHRF Ratings

I would like to start racing with my Mac 26D.
How do you determine your Boat Class and PHRF rating.
Does each Sailing Club establish their own class assignments, and
rating, or is there an organization that calculates your boat
by dimensions and sail size?

PHRF handcaps are assigned , monitored, and reported by your local club. Many times this will roll up into regional rating that allows clubs from an area to race together. Below is all the 2013 data for mac26s. Your closest area looks like Detroit. So 222, but ask your club what it uses. The first number is the boats PHRF rating using a spinnaker. The next letter and following two numbers are not rating related.

Some people sandbag the 1st several races, and 'sometimes' get a higher rating...

Around here (BBYRA), you fill out a form, with any mods and the sails you can/may use, and get a rating.
Then you appeal, and then, you can complain Forever!

-Honestly, I have never ever met anyone happy with their rating.

Some people must LOVE their ratings, they are the people that are making the rest unhappy! ;^)

The list I showed was the basis for the low/hi/mean report that you posted... US sailing members can access the full set, which show it by regions.

We just did a more or less for fun race (the Sippy Cup) on the northern Chesapeake and they assigned my 26s a 222. I think that mid-adventure, a Mac 25 had a 223 or 225. The venture 21 was up around 253 if I recall.

We're they fair? Who knows, personally I don't care but I am betting theCUSCUS would lone to have a slightly higher handicap over the past 2 years
