Ratings are based upon the performance potential of the boat. It is assumed to be in racing condition with a full set of racing sails by an experienced seamanlike crew. They are set by local committees based upon local conditions. In my area, they assume wind of about 10 knots. In other areas, the wind may be 8 knots, 12 knots, or whatever. You can find the same boats from different areas vary quite a bit. You can get credits... roller furling (6 sec typ), a fixed prop (3 sec/blade typ) or penalties...oversized jib (-3 sec for 160% typ) and other items.

Chances are that your boat has an established rating in your area. When it is a new boat, you have to establish the rating based upon similar boats, and then see how it does over a year or so, and adjust. Adjustments are typically 3 seconds a mile up or down at a time.

Your best bet is to do a search for a local PHRF committee, and get a rating from them.

Hi
there is a rating list put together by the international sailing federation which is based on all boats of certain make and model that race. this list is broken down into 3 catagories, being low/high and Average rating of specific boats. Floow this link and click on the the high/low/mean average listing. You will find all the boats there. Hope this helps

Most clubs on the eastern seaboard use the average rating for there boats, with some small changes based off specific boats add-ons..
Looks like your boat would be rated at 180 seconds/nm. That is a TOD rating it can be converted into TOT with a small calculation which you can find online, I just don't have right here

H28.5 PHRFs tend to range from 173 to 186 depending on the whims of the local race committee. My shoal draft boat was rated 183 a few years ago. If you race and win a lot, expect to be rated lower; if you lose you'll be rated higher. Such is life.

Talk to Stu Sauer who keeps a very competitive H28.5 in Worton Creek.

Warren,
Actually, I'm in Tolchester about 6 milers further south, but have raced with the group out of Warton on occasion (years ago).

The northern Chesapeake Bay PHRF rating for our deep keel 28.5, with headfoil, folding prop and 155% Genoa (non Spinnaker) has always been 174.

I don't know how much they'd add back on for a 110%Jib, or possibly for roller furling, but I can tell you you will need at least a 150 % Genoa to be competitive in the usuall Chesapeake wind speeds under 15 knots. I'd need 20 - 25 knots of wind to be using a 110 in a race and would rather have a larger Genoa and reef the main when necessary
