I have just recieved a PHRF rating for my H460. It has been rated at 99 by So. Calif PHRF. It has been entered in the Newport to Ensenada Race to begin April 28th. We are very happy with the rating. If the wind gods are on our side, we should do well!

Good Luck

Best of Luck with your rating. My personal experience with racing B&R rigged Hunters suggests your gonna get creamed. The older Hunters sail to their ratings, the new ones rate fast, but can't sail to it. On the upwind leg you'll get killed by J Boats, C&C's etc... On the downwind everybody will kill you. On a reach you'll do just fine! Just remember none of us bought our new Hunters to be race boats, or if you did you bought the wrong boat. Enjoy Bob Knott H380

Where are you going to put the Trophy!

Is this true? A Hunter passage 42 is 90-93. Good luck in the race. Do you have a Gennacker? If so who made it, North or UK?

PHRF rating

Sounds like a good rating to me. We got our So Cal PHRF rating for our 380 of 102. We will also be racing to Ensanada in gennaker A class. Let me think about this after a 125 mile downwind race you will have to be ahead of us by 6.25 minutes to beat us on corrected time. If we are anywere near that close to you at the finish line one of us did real good job of sailing. Good luck at the race. Andy Hansom Vanishing Point

Good Luck, Patrick..

..sounds like a reasonable rating. Say hello to Michael Cohn in the H45 'Firewater'. He's had a crew busily working on his boat to prepare. Hope everything is well with you. Your former 'Misjudged' is doing well under our watch We're Santa Monica Windjammers' Yacht Club, so there should be a few of us collecting some silver. Rick D.

PHRF rating

My previous boat was a 40.5 with a rating of 102. The H460 is a much faster boat, so I was very happy with the 99 rating. The boat is entered in the cruising class A with a gennaker. The cruising class is limited to boats with a PHRF of greater than 78, and allowances are made for furling head and main sails and head sails less than 140%. My actual rating for my class will be 123. This is usually an off the wind race all the way to Mexico and we should have 500 to 600 boats entered in the event. Half the people are serious racers and the other half are there to have a safe and fun time.

Don't run over Orion! (38 Nantucket)

Patrick- Have a blast! As a displaced Newport Beach sailor, I know the fun you are about to have. Do not run over my buddy Don in the 38 Nantucket named "Orion." His rating is listed in scientific notation, so while being slow, if he finishes by the 4th of July he will trophy! If you should happen to get close to him (beautiful blue hull, teak decks) tell him Bruce wants to race him in Lake Michigan! Have a great race...."Inside, or outside?", that is the question!

Nantucket 38

Dear Bruce: It is really a small world. Don is a staft comm. at my yacht club and a great guy. I've been sailing on his boat when it was called another name and have friends who will be crewing with him on the Race. I'll pass along your regards. Take care, Patrick Magers Misjudged II

What Was the 40.5 PHRF Cruising Rating?

NM, Rick D.

40.5 PHRF

Dear Rick: The Ensenada Race rating for the 40.5 cruising class would be 111. Assuming full batten main, 150 headsail on a furler, and full tanks. A folding or feathering prop is 0, two blade fixed +6 and three blade is +9. With the two blade fixed, your boat would be 117.

YRA-LIS PHRF HUNTER 460

I recently received a phrf rating from the YRA-LIS of 108 plus 9 seconds per mile for cruising gear and furling jib for the standard issue 110. I've added a three blade folding gori prop. with a 20 inch diameter. We'll see what happens this spring racing season.

Been there

I hope the H460 isn't really that slow !

A PHRF of 108 for a modern 46 footer with a 39 foot waterline does not reflect well on the designer. Using the YRA-LI list, this puts it right at par with smaller boats such as the Jonmeri 40 (105) and Catalina 42 (102). It suggests that H460 sailors will see the transoms of quite a few venerable designs with shorter waterlines, such as the Stevens 47 (93) and Swan 40 (90). The ratings of modern cruising designs, such as the J/42 (72), suggest they'll leave you in the dust. I hope, for Hunter's sake, that this initial rating is generous, and that you clean up on the race course.
