I'm thinking of purchasing a H23. I'm a club racer and want something that is reasonable in the cruising class. When I looked up the H23 in the New England sheet it only shows a H23cb (which I take to mean center board) @ 240. Since the H23.5 has a center board I think this is what the PHRF is reffering to. If this is the case does anyone know what the H23 with a wing keel is? Also how does the wing keel affect the pointing on the H23? Thanks. Joe M.

Hi Mine is a wing keel and the rating I have is the same you mentioned. I'll be racing in Nahunt in the next few weeks and I'll get my rating and let you know. I thought the rating would be lower. We should get together for some racing. Be in touch

My experience with the H23

...Forget trying to point with the rest of the fleet- With that shallow draft wing keel, you'll just slide sideways a lot and get upset about turning in less-than-optimum times. Better to fall off a little and keep your forward boat speed up (even if it seems you're not going where the rest of the fleet is)- You'll find you're getting to the winward mark in very competitive times indeed! 240 seems like a high rating; I seem to remember a number closer to 205 in my area. There was an H23 with a 'swing-wing' keel, but there are VERY few of those (I think they only made it for one year). There are other H23 racers here, with much better info about the boat (Cliff? Dan? Pipe in any time!) than I can pass on. Check the archives, and good luck! --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

"wing and a swing"

I have one of those H-23's with a wing and a swing board. Is there a different rating? What has been the problem with the"swinger", if they only made it one year seems there was some problem or no differnce in performance. This boat seems awful tippy even in moderate winds, whats the solution? David Mosley, Columbia, S. Carolina
