PH IIc replaces Jabsco

Peggy, I was successful in replacing the "disposable" Jabsco with a PHII on compact base. I did have to drill four new holes. Otherwise the only problems incurred were: 1) longer freshwater hose- because the fresh water fitting of the PHII is on the front and the Jabsco was on the back/top, you either have to extend the hose or replace with an extra foot or so. I seem to recall some discussion in this forum regarding hose selection. Initially I wanted the "geniune/orginal" type white hose that came from the factory but after seeing how easily the pliers puncture the hose when trying to remove it I am satisfied with the clear braided hose available at Home Depot (3/4" I.D.) And I am one of those "always close the thru hulls when leaving the boat" people. Any comments on the hose choice? 2) The head (shower) cover won't go all the way down due to the handle on the PH II. My solutions may be a)customize the handle with a 35 degree turn to the right and 45 degree turn down, b) cut a slot in the lid (I hate cutting FBG) or c) live with it and remove the handle when I want to lower the cover. Guess which I'm thinking! Do you have an extra handle I can bend for "factory test"! All test are not in but with all that said, the PHII obviously has more of a power stroke than that lil old plunger Jabsco (plugger or plunger I don't know? I'll try to remember to take some pics of the install this weekend.

I hope you meant...

"Flush" water when you wrote "fresh water".'cuz the PH II should never be connected to the onboard fresh water system. As for your choice of intake hose, not all hoses are created equal, even if they appear to be the same. And any hose connected to a below-water thru-hull must be one rated for below-waterline use...and since very little clear water hose is, it's unlikely that any clear water hose sold by HD would be. Closing your seacocks when you leave the boat protects it when you aren't aboard...but not when you're cruising offshore after the hose gets a little age and exposure to salt and all the other junk in coastal waters. Hoses, like hard PVC pipe, is identified by a "schedule" #...hard pipe is #40 or 80...white hose rated for sanitation use is #148...etc. You really should find out what the hose you bought is, and whether that "schedule" is rated for below-waterline connections. As for modifying the pump handle...I suggest you give Vic Willman at Raritan a call to discuss your options. 800-352-5630 x 6. Or...you could just raise the shower lid.

Remove Handle

Perhaps becuase we only occasionally shower on board (more dail sailing and long week-ends) we just elected to pull the handle when its shower time. The pin holding the handle really wasn't necessary, the handle was snug enough w/o it, so typically the seat is locked in the up position, and when we need to use the show, simply pull out the handle, stow in safe stop, lower seat and take the shower. BTW - we replaced the Jabsco with PH II last season and just love the PH II.

Flushing water fresh from the sea(lake)

Yes, I meant the "fresh" water pumped out of the lake via the thru-hull. I check the rating on that hose but it sure seem tougher than the white stuff! Anyway, I'm set for Labor Day.
