so wife does all bright work and has always used varnish. New boat toe rail will be stripped and wife has been reading about different products one being petit sea gold. Does anybody have experience with this...... she liked the way it fast dries so she can get multi coats on per day.... so what is the general opinion??

Thanks!

Everyone has their favorite. Mine is honey teak. A new coat can be applied every 20 minutes. It can be applied outside in the sun in wide ranges of temp and humidity.

For the toe rail, Cetol Natural Teak with a final coat of gloss.

Toe rails get much wetter than other wood on the boat. Cetol allows water vapor to pass through the finish and not trap it under the finish which causes the varnish to lift.

On other areas, one of the Epifanes varnishes in gloss. They make one that allows multiple coats in a day. On items well protected from the sun or the interior, Minwax Polyurethane.

The Pettit Sea Gold (water based) has got very good reviews from many of the builders and boatyards here in Maine. Great for build layers, there is only a satin version at this point, they are working on the gloss but there testers haven't been happy with some of its characteristics. If you desire a gloss final coat you can use Pettit Captains varnish over the Sea Gold. I got this info from the North East tech sales rep from Pettit, he tests everything himself.
My preferred combo of products is build layers with Epifanes Rapid Coat/Rapid clear, then final coats of their Gloss varnish.
Everyone has their favorites.....

New product, no multi-year testing. Which is the essence of these new brightwork finishes - how to avoid massive yearly restoration.

I'm a huge fan of Epifanes and they make a varnish especially formulated for teak. I am familiar with the Pettit Sea Gold and have ordered some Satin and also have on order the gloss, which is supposed to be available soon. You can apply several coats of Pettit Gold Satin and then finish it off with a gloss varnish if you want a quick build up but a gloss finish and cannot wait for the gloss Gold to be available. Pettit Gold can also be applied over any existing varnish too.
