Persistant leak from Racor filter

I have a Parker Racor R12PUL filter with the water separator bowl, for my Panda gen. I recently did a filter change and I now have a constant, albeit slight, drip from the filter which is being collected in a drip pan. I have read on another sailing forum that it seems to be a fairly common problem. In that forum one guy figured it out, and it was the powder coating had separated and not letting the rubber seal do its job. He removed the powder coating and it stopped the leak. So I have two questions for ya'll.
Have you ever had that issue and if you did, what did you do to fix it.
Also I am thinking of getting away from racor all together and would like to mayby just use a spin on filter with nor water separator bowl. Do you have any ideas on a manufacturer to replace the housing and what filter or can I use a different filter without the bowl that spins on to the current housing

Yeah, the racor 110 is more than adequate for a genset and has none of those issues.
