I have an unusual problem the door for my head on my1993 Catalina 28 swung closed and the door locked. Don' know how it happened but it did. the problem I have now is how do I get the door opened without ruining it.
Suggestions appreciated

Thanks

With any luck at all the hinge pins are on the side of the door you are on? If so, drive them out. If not try unscrewing the knob and the lock from the outside and see what you've got. Most boat door knob assemblies are pretty simple and not meant for security.
After the horse has left the barn advice; I ALWAYS remove the locking mechanism on all interior door locks when I buy a boat.

Doesn't it have a small hole on the outside? If so stick a small pick or stiff wire in that to release the lock.

peterbud,

Is the round knob facing you on the outside? Or is it the lever handle?

From the pics,

If that's the model Perko, you might get some two-piece thing through the square hole; and then, as you twist it, flip the lock button?

Is there a vent on the deck above that you can remove?

All I can think of is a thin blade in the door jam to push back the latch. My door is slightly warped so you have to pull it to latch it. Don't know how to fix it as the outside is wood and the head side is plastic.

There isn’t a latch safety lock the latch so you should be able to use a credit card to slip between the jam and latch. (Old school)

These are really simple locks. By locking, you just shift a cam that presses against the back of the tongue of the lock, so a cc won't do any good.
Have you tried to unscrew the outer plate, first pulling out the piece the knob turns? As mentioned above, perhaps an Allen wrench through the hole could pop the locking knob up.
If you don't have any luck, take some pics and pm me and if we have the same lock I'll dismantle ours and send you picks of the insides. Ours have round door knobs on both sides on all but the engine room door.
We're pretty busy, but I should be able to help you (internet connection permitting) over the next week or so.
