PERKINS DIESEL OVERHEATS

I have a 95 Beneteau 351 with the Perkins Diesel (Ibelieve the model # is M30). It overheats a cruising speed...past 270 degrees F, 100 C. It eventually cools down when the engine is at low RPM. I bought the repair manual but it does not specify what temperature is normal, although I would think somewhere around 220F would be normal.I changed the impeller, made sure there was no blockage I could find and decided to replace the thermostat. No problem until I find out that the therostate is behind the water pump and that the whole pump assembly has to come out. I pulled off all the necessary parts and got down to the pump removal step but the pump wouldn't budge. Decided not to force it off and put everything back together.Questions:Has anyone had a similar experience with this engine? What's your operating temp?Is there another source of the problem you encountered?If you removed the water pump to change the thermostat, how did you do it and what tools did you use?If you did change the thermostate, did it solve the problem?Many thanks!

M-30 overheat

I have the same engine, and it runs right at 150 degrees F, sounds like to me your heat exchanger is plugged and you need to flush your cooling system. To pull the water pump is easy and everything is metric.

Thanks, JC..... Did you need any special tools to pull the water pump?What's the best way you've found to flush the system? I've opened the drain cock and flushed the system with fresh water. Maybe I need to do it again.

No special tools required, mine actually froze up and wouldn't let the engine start. You will need a new gasket that is sold seperately. Use regular radiator flush systems. If your engine was running that hot, the over temp cutout should be shutting your engine off. Check your gauges, remember 100 degrees C is the same as 212 F.

Just did mine, Perkins Perama 30?

Hi Bob;I have a 95 Oceanis with the perkins Perama 30 and it was abit of a bear to remove the water pump. There are 2 gaskets involved and I used a kitchen tool that was used to remove cakes from pans to break the seal. Tapping from the opening for the aft cabin. I needed something that was thin and not very wide- had to replace this for the wife...There are about 12 bolts and when you remove the pump from the block there is a plate with another gasket between the pump and the plate with a bolt going in the oposite direction.This means 4 surfaces to clean before putting the new gaskets in place.I was used to something on top of the block with 2 bolts>>>>Anyway, glad I did this prior to launch or motoring someplace in mid summer.CheersDave
