Considering purchasing a boat with the original 1978 Perkins 4-108 engine. Raw water pump has some corrosion. How much of a red flag is this?

Speaking of the impeller, it would be good to know the condition of the small fasteners that hold the cover.

This is just such a minor issue, it would or should not stop one from purchasing the boat. One would really have to worry about more faults with gravity. If one wishes to be so anal, get the seller to replace the impeller.

Probably needs a new o-ring where the cover meets the housing. Use a brass (not steel) wire brush chucked in a drill and it will clean up good as new. I'd replace that rusty hose clamp at the bottom of the picture. Would be trouble if it were to let go.

This is a minor issue.
Can you access the pump? The pump can be replaced if needed. It looks like raw water leaking from the service cover and likely no gasket was used when the impeller was last changed. There does not appear to be a problem with the bolts attachment to the engine only the service cover.

You will be changing the impeller should you buy the boat and can cleanup the pump.

The Perkins is a workhorse of an engine.

What about the rest of the boat?

Thanks for the comments. @jssailem - The rest of the boat is pristine. However, I do expect to have to change out the sheaves at the masthead and will need to replace the standing rigging and sails in the next 5 years. This is to be expected with most older sailboats I guess.

They are a pretty simple pump, direct drive, cheap to replace if needed. A new one can be bought at Parts4Enginres in the UK, shipped to your door cheaper the parts rebuild kit.

  1. Sheaves. That is a Maybe. Need inspection. May just need lube. Check the size of the halyard. Too big for sheave means friction and difficulty in hoisting sail.
  2. Old boat (you did not state age) can need standing rigging replacement. If so consider taking mast down and doing complete refit. Mast and rigging are what manage the power of a sail boat. These parts wear down based on age, type of use, abuse, and location. Do it sooner than later. You will be safer sailing and get more joy out of the experience. You sail in a location known for strong winds and fun sailing. Don’t get caught out in the bay with a questionable rig. Once done you may be good for as long as you own the boat.
  3. Sails are your power source. Consider doing the replacement over several years if your budget is tight. With an Islander I suspect your more into cruising then racing. So you can try and budget a sail a year. New sails will give you and the boat a lift. Along with the sails comes running rigging. Oh the joy of a boat. (Break Out Another Thousand).
The rigging is a priority.

If this boat is new to you then you’ll likely scan all the magazines and develop an I want that for my boat list. I suggest you take a few months with just the boat you have. Get to know her. Get the feel of her. You may find that all the glitz in the marketing is not needed on your boat. And your boat budget will thank you.

Like everyone said, minor but...you have to ask yourself when was the last time that cover came off ?? It should be checked and changed regularly.
