PERKINS 4-108 main rear seal replacement?

So, I have removed the transmission Velvet Drive 71C replacing the fwd seal. My mechanic suggests that I replace the main rear seal on the engine as well. The quoted time for this job is 16 hrs., does 2 days seem like a reasonable time estimate. I've been loosing oil from the transmission for a bit and the attached pic shows why! The front seal is buggered.....

I thought that I heard that engine's rear seal has a design issue with the gasket not sealing? I'm not sure about that.

There was an issue with the rope seal.

I am not positive, as it's been a very long time since I've operated a boat w/a 4-108, but if memory serves, the rear main seal on that engine can be replaced without dismantling the engine or dropping the pan. Pull out the old one, clean the seat and very carefully seat the new seal.
Obviously check on this, but if it is so this certainly shouldn't take 16 hours.
