If you are looking for performance, this may not be the boat for you. I went from the front of the pack in my Catalina 27 to the back in the 310 with a wing keel, but you can't beat the comfort of the fwd berth, or the amenities the boat has. I agree with witzend that it does OK in 15 kts or more, but a bit of a slug in light winds.
Actually, I think the 310 is about middle of the road. It is a bit aggravating that we have an average 186 PHRF and many of the guys with the same PHRF or near it blow my doors out on some races.I would have to disagree slightly.
I have the fin keel and 135 genoa with factory sails. Finished 2nd overall in my fleet and in one very very very light air race; I dusted the whole fleet by over 15 min on a 6 mile around the cans race.
It is tender even with what appears to be a C320 keel. At 15kts true I have the first reef in and by 20, the second.
I sailed on a broad reach in 25kts with full main... Gusts to 35 surfed the boat to 10kts... A gust to 45kts surfed it to 12kts (GPS, not knotmeter) but then she rounded up big time...
Someday I am going to spring for 3DL's and see how she does!
