Saturday December 31st 2011: Sailed the central San Francisco Bay from Sausalito, around Treasure Island/Yerba Buena, back along the SF waterfront, out just past the Golden Gate Bridge and finally along the Marin headlands to the home berth in Sausalito. Steady North wind, sunny skies, +50 mile air clarity, fairly benign current velocity, upper 50's temp on the bay and probably lower 60's back in the berth. And with winds per the below table, conditions were more than perfect for hoisting the mainsail to the top of the mast and unfurling the 135 genoa all the way out. Most of the time the GPS and the knot meter were in the 6.0 - 7.0 kt range. The attached pictures weren't taken today, but they show the type of day it was and the view from a couple of our positions during today's outing.

For a sailor -- and the wife who handled the helm a good part of the trip -- very fine way to end 2011.

Good New Year to us Hunter Cherubini owners (-- and whoever else might be lurking on the forum)!

Pretty cool!! I plan to sail in the SF bay on the 1st in 67 F, sunny and 10-15 knots out of the north.

Stephen:

Thanks for alerting me about tomorrow's forecast. This morning's NWS edition was for the typical SF Bay winter situation of virtually no wind -- plus a spare the air day -- meaning hazy and stagnent. Upon reading your response, I looked again. "NNW wind 7 to 15 kt. Sunny" Definitely worth going out again.

Marina Bay Yacht Harbor has an excellant weather report. As you can see we get some wind, almost every afternoon.

I feel hugely priviileged to be in this area, in this state, in this country.

Thanks for the link to the Marina Bay harbor "current conditions" web page. Being able to scan various sites for a "composite" view of the SF Bay situation is useful.

I've bookmarked it!

Yes, we are fortunate to have found ourselves located in the San Francisco Bay area. On a mid-week winter day when I am sometimes one of only a handful of sailboats (or the only one) in view from the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge to the Golden Gate to the Bay Bridge, I can look around and see the the city, the East Bay hills, Marin and even down to Mt Hamilton above San Jose. I think there are maybe 3-4 million people living in the in the area I can see. But I am one of only several that happens to be in the middle of the bay totally above the fray.

Sounds like a great sail. We took Short Circuit out yesterday on the gulf coast, Gulfport. Just unfurlled the genoa. Winds about 9 knots. Weather was warm 69 deg.
Wish we could sail in SF bay!!! (I commuted from Fairfield when I went to SFU to get my engineering degree).

Feels great when mid winter conditions are conducive for a sailing day.

.... Wish we could sail in SF bay!!! ....
Wind in the SF area has been in short supply of late. Seems to have happened after the 49er's met the New York Giants about 10 days ago .... sort of took the wind out of the sails for the entire region.
