Does anyone have chartering experience in Pensacola? We are planning to charter there next spring. We do not have any experience sailing in that area. Any information you may have to share would be great.

Pensacola beach charters

Bud,
I have not chartered there but sail there regulary, (prior to the oil). There is a charter company that works out of little Sabine at Pensacola beach. They seem like nice guys and there boats look pretty well kept. It is Emerald Coast Yachts http://www.ecsailing.com/default.htm

It is a great area, you will enjoy the trip.

Depends on HOW much time you're going to spend. Very large bay with lots to do on the backside of the beaches/barrier islands. Many overnight possibilities with protection from the Gulf. Things to do in the downtown marina area as well. Only real "travel" opportunity is to take the "ditch" east as far as Appalachicola (do the "cola to cola") or west over to Mobile Bay. Would refrain from doing it "outside" unless you want to take a beating. Naval Air Museum in Pensacloa is fabulous.

I agree one hundred percent with Bob. We charteerd with them for years before we bought our own boat. Ask for Rick. Great guy. Their website shows their recommendations for mini cruises. Great area to sail also.

Thank you. You have all given a lot of great information. The sample trip on the Emerald Coast Sailing website was very helpful. We are really looking forward to the trip. We are planning a 7 day charter. All of our charter trips have been to the BVI. We love the BVI but we felt like doing something in the US this time. We have made many trips to the beaches of the Gulf Coast but have never sailed this area. The Gulf Coast from Fort Morgan to St George's Island has all of our favorite beaches. I am looking forward to the learning curve of a new sailing area. I can tell that the sailing plan for this sailing area will take a different approach than the BVI sailing plan we had.

Hi Bud,

I am envious of you having 7 days down there...what a great place to cruise and explore. I have chartered out of Pensacola with Lanier Sailing Academy and both times were excellent! Last time I checked they had 3 Benneteau's available in the bareboat fleet...all 3 are newer boats. I have taken out the 393 and the 331.

You should Google "Lanier Sailing Academy Pensacola" and check them out...or call Kathy, John or Tony at 850.432.3199. There's a lot to do and the web site lists many spots. We have got lucky and saw a Blue Angles practice while anchored in Big Lagoon. With our 3 day trip, we usually get in the gulf and sail west to the Perdido, spend a night there around Bear Point Marina and sail back the next day. We have had great sailing in the gulf.....but like everything, you have to check the weather. It would be fun to go further West to Alabama or the Mississippi Sound area.
If you plan to stay in the ditch, there are some fixed bridges and the Benneteau 393 can not go East in the ICW towards Destin because of that. I would give them a call to discuss your plans and the options.

Good luck !

Good luck with your trip and you can't go wrong with the folks at Lanier Sail Academy - Pensacola.
