Penetrol

I've been reading the archives about grey chalky toerails and seems like Penetrol is the way to go. However, when I looked in Google for the product, it seems like there are two types. One is made by Flood's and is available at Lowe's. It's use is for thinning paint so you don't get brush marks. Then there's Marine Penetrol. Is this a case where it's really the same product but if they put Marine in front of the name can charge more or is there really a difference in the products? The archives say that the M.P. is available at West Marine, but it's not in their web catalogue. Any suggestions?

Waste of time/money.

Michele: I tried Penetrol on fiberglass and it is not worth the time or money. I suggest that you try the Island Girl system. It will remove the oxidation and re-condition the gel coat too. Once it is clean, you can use the Island Girl Sealant and their wax or any other wax.

Toerail

Am I missing something? I thought you asked about a toerail not fiberglass! Oh well, some people just like to see their answers I guess! Seriously, I have the same problem and hope you get a real answer.

Aluminum Perforated Toe Rails?

Is that what you are referring to?? I wasn't aware Penetrol was used for these. I think it's the same stuff anyway, if that's the question. I have purchased it over the years both at marine supply outlets and hardware stores. However, I think I'd try an aluminum polish designed for anodized surfaces first. Rick D.

Not tried penetrol for aluminum but

I use IG Superglaze on my cleants, winches, furling drum, poles spars and perforated (black anodized toerail). Unlike a regule "clear coat" it bonds to the metal really tightly. I think that in the Chandlery section you will see a report by someone you used on black anodized mast. If you know of anything better or the penetrol really seems to work for you - please let us know. I do know that it does not hold up on fiberglass gelcoat. Jim W

Jim Willis: Question

Do you use Pink to clean the aluminum before Superglaze? I'm preparing to do the mast and rigging and would like to have your recommendation. Also, I suppose Pink running down my mast will strip the wax I just paid for too, huh? Oh well. Rick D.

Aluminum cleaning and coating

If you use pink with lots of water (one capful in a bucket of water) it is equivalenf of using mild boat soap. It will remove most grime, but no wax. If there is a lot of "greasy stuff" you use pink with much less water. You should not have it running anywhere since you can literally use it like a "lotion" on a small pad of paper towel. On spars, there is often spotty oxidation. Do no use harsh abrasive. Use an auto "mag wheel cleaner" which is acid and should be kept of sail and running gear, lightly scuff as you do it. Then seal with the Glaze. Put on more coats if you want a deep gloos, less for a more original look. Hope this is of some help. I have had glaze on test areas of my mast and boom.but need to do the acid treatment when I tak the main down for repair Hope this is of some help Thanks Jim W

Thanks to Jim & Rick. I have IG Superglaze that I haven't used yet (just getting started with all their products) and I will definitely use that before I try Penetrol. I was aware that the Penetrol wouldn't last too long but I was willing if it made it look better. As my husband keeps telling me, 'I only care about the cosmetics'. But I think we're a good team because he cares about EVERYTHING else! Unfortunately, it's only about 50, cloudy and rainy here today, so I might not find out how it works this weekend. May in Tidewater......Thanks again!
