Pelican life line clasp

My lower life line pelican clasp broke. If it matters I have a 2005 Hunter 33. Went to West Marine they were not very helpful. In the end they just did not have the exact clasp I needed. I looked on the Huneterowner.com site and there were a number of pelican clasp. However there are 2 issues. 1) how do I figure out or determine what is screw size. 2) They also requested if it was a left hand or a right hand attachment ( screw direction? ). I was always under the impression... Righty tighty lefty losey :) .... without going back out to my boat ( half an hour away ) how do I determine LH or RH?

Thank you for all of you guidance with this issue.

Rigging uses both left hand thread and right hand threads. That's how a turnbuckle can tighten and loosen the rigging. The only way I know to tell whether it is RH or LH is to try and tighten the rigging piece to see which way it goes. You could buy one each and return the one that didn't work.

Mike - I assume that the female screw terminal did not break, rather the jaw mechanism did. Take the broken clasp to your local hardware store and find a machine screw that fits... And that's the size. Also, you may be able to get a repair kit for the gate.... Check out Defender.com

Unless there's an opposing threaded stud, (like a turnbuckle) the pelican hook's thread will most likely be right handed. ... but since you're only 1/2 hour from your boat, it would make sense to wait till you can verify at the boat. First of all, leaving the lower lifeline gate unhooked will not pose any inconvenience but you can always temporarily lash it with some light cord (rolling hitch, anyone). Next you can simply remove the existing upper pelican hook, check fitment and thread direction on lower wire, and then have your local chandlery measure and replace. There are usually only two sizes and it's almost always based on wire thickness. Or... you can go online to any rigging service now that you're armed with accurate data.

Get one of each. Most likely you'll need the other one sometime, and they won't be any cheaper.

Buy a small assortment of fine thread nuts from the hardware store to verify size. Alternatively you can measure the size of the cable with a caliper ($5 on ebay and well worth it!). Each wire size has a corresponding thread size

Mike,
I'm replacing my pelican hooks with Johnson overcenter pelican hooks. I'm taking an old one to Home Depot to see what size they are. I know they are righty loosy, lefty tighty.
