Anybody know where I might find one of those little tiny springs that are on a Merriman life-line pelican hook? on a 1985 34

I have actually found them at either Home Depot or Lows, in the hardware section where thay have the small bins with all sorts of small items. Jeff

Hi Neil, if it were my boat I would stick with ...

a SS spring if you can find one to fit. I had a similar problem when we first purchased our boat five years ago. I ended up buying a whole new hook and kept the old one as a spare. Seemed kind of silly to spend so much money just for a spring. Perhaps a fastener retailer, such as Tacoma Screw, can locate one for you. Another alternative is to check with a local marine exchange retailer. They usually have all kinds of parts for boats in their accessory bin. A few years ago, as I was servicing our Maxwell winch switch, I dropped a small spring down into the bilge area where I could not reach it. Maxwell sent me a replacement at no charge. Terry

Terry, I hate those Maxwell springs.

Haven't lost one yet. The solution is to just not service them. ;) Back to Merriman. I replaced my lifelines with new stuff OF THE PROPER SIZE! That 1/8" wire from Hunter is a cheese-cutter. Horrible and dangerous. Too small for anything but children. As I recall, the spring is not needed for the pelican hooks to work. It's just a convenience. I wouldn't waste fuel looking.

been there..done that

I believe the spring is needed to keep the hooks in the closed position, else the keeper moves to let the hook come unhooked, and your lifeline gate is dragging in the water. I replaced mine with the ones that come with common drywall butterfly fasteners. Maybe im not calling it by its correct name. You know, you drill a hole in drywall, fold the butterfly wings against the screw, then insert the wings in the hole. The wings then spring open against the back of the drywall and you can tighten the screw... Anyway, that spring, with a few modifications, lasted for years when I did replacements on mine. Eventually I just went to new Johnson pelican hooks. They are much nicer and easier to use (but expensive).

Spring for Pelican fastner

Neil, I speak from recent experience. I was going to clean up pin in fastner and lube because it had become hard to open and close. When I took off the spiral loop that holds the pin in, everything slid right out and you know where it went, right into the water. Faced with buying a new hook, I removed and took to local marine supply store to make sure I got the correct complete replacement hook and lo and behold they had a kit that included spring, pin and spiral. This kit was only about $10.50 as compared to price of new complete latch of $30.00. On page 1106 of the new West Marine catalog (2007 Annual catalog) they show two "snap shackle repair kits" of different sizes for $14.00 to 16.00. One of these should work for you. TimC
