I need to replace one of my lifeline pelican hooks (ker-plunk) on my 1974 Catalina 22. I ordered a 1/4" but it was too small. Next size is 5/16" but I think that will be too small too. Next size after that is 1/2" but that sounds too big. I brought the lock nut to my hardware store but amazingly they couldn't find a bolt that would fit it. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated as usual.

It looks like this (below) may have been my issue. Just ordered right threaded 5/16. Thx.

Caution: For reasons unknown to us, most standard pelican hooks (including the "normal" ones we use in our lifeline kits) use left hand threads. It is unusual to find the right hand thread as used by Catalina Yachts. Most pelican hooks found in your local chandlrey therefore will not fit your lifelines.

Good info !

Hooks received and learned how to make a Portuguese sinnet lanyard for each of them. Can't wait to see how they look! Assuming something like earrings for a boat. Lol

Super frustrated at this point. 3 strikes so far.

Strike 1: Suncor S0162-0007 - 1/4 RH Thread (thread too small)
Strike 2: Suncor S0162-0008 - 5/16 RH Thread (right size - thread direction wrong)
Strike 3: Marine Part Depot - 5/16 LH Thread (thread too coarse - looks like I need 28/in. instead of 24//in.

From what I can tell, only 1/4" comes in 28/in.

Pic attached. I may end up replacing the entire lifeline gate with a new swage but that's my last resort. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rather than guess just take fitting to a machine shop. In less than a minute they can use tap and die set to measure your thread size and pitch.

Luckily my pelican hooks themselves are salvageable, but I need to replace the lines and threaded swage fittings. For the immediate future I believe I am going to leave my life lines off the boat. Living on the edge I know. I have a friend with a C22 who already got a new complete lifeline kit so he offered my his old set which isn't in bad shape. One way or another I think I can salvage all the required parts, but if I need new swage fittings there is also RiggingOnly.com and Rigging Depot.

tapping out the threads is easy. Left handed threads in that size will take someone with an extensive inventory.

Since I assume your sitting on all three still as long as the outside diameter is the same on all of them and they just put different holes and threads in all three. Your going to want to take in the smallest of the three.

If you take one that is really close to the right size he wont have enough meat to tap it out meaning when he is done it will be a very weak set of threads.

If you take the smallest one then after he drills it out to the correct diameter starting hole you'll have a full set of professional threads.

You may have thought of this already just wanted to throw it out there.

I have a very extensive tap and die set from when I was doing industrial maint but don't have but a few left handed.

Your other option that's just as good is to DIE out the swag and personally I believe that would be the easier option to try before trying to replace it.

Again die it to the smaller size you have that is right handed and there ya go

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to start over and go back the the hardware store to find out what size I'm dealing with. The first time they had no clue but I'll grab the owner this time and I'm sure he can figure it out.

From their I'll figure out if that size is available or order a smaller thread and try to tap it to the size I need. I just did some reading and tap and die methods and it does look pretty easy. I have a drill press so I should be able to do it myself with the right size tap. Unfortunately, everything has been returned at this point. Riggingonly is a great site that didn't come up in any of the searches I did so thanks for that ref. too. Thx again.

Follow up; the threads are 5/16, LH, 24/in. Marine depot dot com sent me 20/in, I mailed them back and never got a refund.

For many rigging needs, take a look at this web site:

http://www.marinepartdepot.com/

Bimini hardware, lifeline hardware, standing rigging hardware, hinges, shackles, etc. All made of 316 stainless steel, highly polished, unbelievable prices, free shipping, and once you get on his mailing list, you'll get coupons for 15%-20% off your order. I've purchased pelican hooks for my mast raising system. Just pay attention to the threads, he sells both SAE and metric, left and right hand threads.

Yes, probably made in China, but I've been buying from him for years with no complaints.

Follow up to my previous post on this thread; I've been leaning heavily toward leaving the lifeline off my C22, but recently read several articles and forum posts about replacing the wire with single braid Dyneema. I should be able to salvage my pelican hooks and clean them up, I have spare open-body turn buckles from old rigging, and I will only need to buy some small bits of hardware to adapt the new Dyneema line to replace the wire. The 40% off Bulk Rope Sale should pop up at WM again around Memorial Day so I'm only looking to spend $50 on the line.

That's too bad. I've ordered more times than I can remember, just received my latest shipment probably a month a go. I've never exchanged e:mails with them.
