Peggy, once again, thanks for your reply to my e-mail. Searching through the forum I ran into someone recommending the Air Head Dry Toilet, explained fully at www.airheadtoilet.com. Have you had experience with this? Would you recommend it? Do you know of anyone who would? Will it do what it claims? Far more important, would the drain of battery juice be insignificant, or would we need a small solar panel as they recommend? thanks

Richard: Why don't you try to get ahold of a copy of Practical Sailor Vol 28 Number 22 Nov 15 2002. They have 2 of these type of toilets with a write up. The pee tank holds about a gallon! If you cannot pump pee overboard can you pour it overboard (legally). I think I prefer to pee overboard (that is probably legal, as long as they don't get you for 'almost indecent exposure'. Then when it is time to dump the compost 'pile' do you spread it in the marina flower beds, the garbage can or haul it home for the vegetable garden. I guess I see the pump out or a Type 1 MSD a much better solution.

Not legal to pump OR pour it overboard
But it is legal to use the lee rail directly from you into the water. Provided it'll fit in the head--which is definitely a factor, 'cuz it's at least twice the size of ANY marine toilet--the Airhead MIGHT be a viable alternative to a holding tank on an inland "no discharge" lake, but in coastal waters where treatment is legal (which except for RI and parts of MAS is just about all coastal waters) a Type I MSD that treats and discharges is by FAR he best solution IMO.

By the way, thanks to you and Peggy for the info on the Airhead. If I recommend your solution of peeing overboard to my daughter or female friends, I can assure you they will never come back. Nonetheless, given some disadvantages to some, you have no idea what I have to do during the winter when I stay aboard and all pump outs are closed for the season. It is imaginative and clean, sort of a porta potty. The great advantage I see for someone like me who likes to live aboard and hates to pump out, is precisely the storage capacity with no odor--assuming this holds true. this would be a blessing. Removing small tanks of urine every now and then, to me, sounds a better proposition than the pump out, which is a hassle and $10 every time you do it, plus the wait, at times. As for the compost, once a season is not bad, given what you have to do to decomission a boat. About putting the stuff in flower beds in the marina, well Steve, I think you want me to get kicked out of the marina. Kidding aside, thanks for the comments and the ideas.

Why not install a Lectra/San instead?
The Lectra/San is a Type I MSD that treats each flush and discharges it overboard. Legal everywhere on the Bay except in two very small "no discharge" zones, and VERY environmentally friendly...doesn't require the use of any chemcials, and the discharge is cleaner than the water in most marinas. You'd never use your holding tank again unless you happen to visit a "no discharge" harbor, or have to worry about finding an open pump out. No need to replace your toilet either, or install a 3" vent stack. In fact, wouldn't require any modifications to your boat at all. And since it only runs for about 2.5 minutes after each flush, consumes less power than the fan and heater in a composter. Price at most discount marine stores isn't much more than the Airhead. Spend a little checking it out on the Raritan website (link below)...just go to Waste Treatment from the home page
