Peggy, I decided to do a rebuild on the head. I got it together, but I feel I may have put a seal in wrong. This part is about 2" by 1" and has one of its corner's angled. I am not able to get sea water into the system. The skematic from Jabsco is of no use. Can you help? John Richard s/v Jack's Place

What is the part # on the drawing? Where in the pump does it go? That may not even be the part that's causing the problem, either.

Jabsco Head
It sounds like the top valve seat. I had the pump for a Jabsco head disassembled and had the same problem until I realized the surface it set on had the outline of the top valve seat designed on it

Fred, Yup, I remember reading that somewhere. Unfortunately, I don't have anything here at the house to refer to. Every time I go down to the boat I forget to check...another one of those senior moments. Peggy told me to "dump" to toilet but my wife is tired of spending money on the boat. Sound familiar? I do remember seeing the outline of this etched into the larger seal, but I still think the thing is assembled wrong because I am not getting any sea water in to the bowl. Peggy, back to you. Upgrade equipment when you have to replace it! Continuing to replace with the cheapest thing you can find only means you have have to KEEP spending money to replace it. Do your homework, ask questions, to find out what's the best "bang for the buck." You don't have to go all the way to the top of the "food chain" (built to last forever)...more often than not--as in the case of toilets--the difference between junk (2-5 yr lifespan) and a good value (20 yr lifespan) isn't that much...especially when you compare it to the cost of repair or replacement of the cheapest. Spend a little more once to save spending 5x as much over several years. As for your immediates woes...go back to the drawing and loock VERY carefully...you'll see all the clues you need to tell you how that part should be oriented.

John: Rick D. loves his Jabsco. He has the equivlant of 4 replacements (plus the original) invested. When you replace that top gasket, be sure that you DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN those screws (they look like a wood screw without a pointed tip). I did one rebuild on my Jabsco and then tossed it in the trash. The replacement PHII has been about as good as it gets and works better too.
