I just replied to a thread regarding a Thetford porta-pottie we installed to replace an illegal head in our Catalina. I have plumbed it for pump-out and have vented it using a very small thru-hull. I understand one normally vents into a stanchion but this isn't an option for me due to solid metal plates on the bottom of the individual posts. Doesn't anyone make a proper vent cap or is the thru-hull the best we can do in this situation? I've been to West Marine and Boater's World and they referred me to Lowe's or Home Depot....sheesh...it's a boat not a house! Any ideas? Thanks.

Venting into a stanchion is NOT normal

The only builder I know of who does is Catalina...and as a result, Catalinas often gas everyone within a 100' radius every time the head is flushed. "Vent" thru-hull fittings are available, but only in 5/8", which is the "standard" size for all tank vents, but smaller than the optimal size for holding tank vents...larger is much better, and so is an open thru-hull instead of most "vent" fittings that reduce the excharge of air. So if the thru-hull you used is at least 5/8", it should be fine. If you used anything smaller, it should be replaced. You might want to check out the link below.
