Re cleaning my water tanks. I followed the directions in your book. I was surprised by the amount of stuff that came out of the faucets! However, after flushing both tanks a couple of times I can still see build up of scum in the tanks. I'm getting flecks of gunk, nothing like at the start, but I don't want to drink the water yet. For background, I think the po hardly ever used the tanks, much less maintained them. He owned the boat about 5 years. My guess is they've not been cleaned or flushed in that time. Sooo, what should I do next? Thanks much!

Drink bottled water

For at least this year you will still have gunk coming out. Just drink bottled water and use your tanks for washing only. Sail a lot to wash the tank insides and eventually the tank will become clean. Next year, if you want to drink the tank water, I suggest that you install a water filter.

How does the water taste/smell?

Are you sure that what you're seeing in the tank--and the flecks, too--isn't hard mineral deposits? Sometimes, if the system is in really bad shape, it can require doing it twice, but that's rare. If your water tastes/smells good, flush out the system till there are no more flecks in the water, then don't worry about it till your water starts to get funky again...'cuz if you followed the directions--used the amount of bleach called for and left it in the system the required amount of time, it's as safe as any water coming out of a faucet on land.
