Peggie, You often recommend using teflon based grease to lubricate the pump on a manual flush head. I was in a West store last weekend and looked in the head section to see what they sold for this purpose. All they had was something to pour in the bowl, which I felt would only lube the bottom side of the piston and put most of the lube in the holding tank. Do you recommend any particular grease for this purpose (brand)? I'm not lookinf for an endorsement just wondering what to buy...perhaps several choices? I assume waterproof grease for motors and wheel bearings is not the right stuff? Thanks, Dave

Dave...go to a bicycle shop, and...

get a lubricant for bicycle chains. It is a white liquid, and it is teflon based. It won't collect dirt and leaves a teflon coating.

Super Lube

However, any synthetic (not petroleum) based teflon grease will do. You should be able to find it at most auto parts stores or swimming pool supply stores.

Amazon.com sells it!

I had trouble finding it locally and ordered it from Amazon.com. A tube should last a while using Peggy's recommendations each spring.

West Marine carries Super Lube in tube form online.

But don't do this...

...put vinegar down at the end of the day, since it will eat away instantly at the grease.

It is a small jar and made by Star Brite. But I use the liquid from West. You don't have to pull the head apart to use it. Work well! But I do use the Star Brite teflon grease when I rebuild the head. And also use it on my thru hulls each year when the boat is on the hard.

Whatever gave you that idea?

You'd have to disconnect the head intake hose and stick in it quart of vinegar and flush the whole quart through to wash all the grease out of the pump. Anything in the bowl only goes only through the bottom of the pump and out the discharge...which is one of the reasons that any head lube poured down the toilet is more or less useless.
