Pedestal Steering Problems

I have the Yacht Specialties (Merriman) pedestal steering in my Hunter 27. My problem is that I can pull to starboard much more than I can pull to port. The steering is a cable system that runs down through the pedestal through two pulleys (one for each cable) where then each cable is redirected around a quadrant gear. When I have the rudder in dead center the single stop on the quadrant gear is already off from dead center by maybe 15 or 20 degrees. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this problem so that my stop and rudder are aligned with dead center at the same time so that both port and starboard have equal throws? Thanks

There are two bolts that hold the quadrant to the rudder shaft

You may be able to loosen these, center the rudder and center the wheel and retighten these two bolts. If this doesn't work things get a lot more complicated. Good luck.

Thank you very much for your reply. I was actually thinking about doing what you suggested but wasn't sure if that was the correct course of action. It makes sense though. Do I have to worry about the height of the quadrant gear on the rudder post changing though making the cables not exactly perpedicular to the length of the boat as they are now? Thanks

Make shore that a PO owner didn't just tighten one side of the cables

to remove any play. That would also cause a misalignment. Also make sure the drive chain in the pedestal is centered. Could the cables be too loose that the chain jumped a few notches?

You may be able to adjust the cables a little also

When you look at the rearmost part of the quadrant, you should see where the cables are attached to eye bolts. They are adjustable and you may be able to dial out a few degrees of misalignment (watch out for the meathooks at the end of the cables *yks). The question is, have you always had this problem or did it just happen? One thing, I would assume that you do not want to alter the alignment of the cables to the quadrant. That will most likely cause wear to the cables and also increase the likelihood that the cables may "jump" out of the tracks. Might not hurt to have someone with steering systems experience take a look for you. Manny

Thanks everyone for all of your help. I'm going to take a look at it on Friday and see what I can do. I'll report back. Thanks again.
