Pedestal guard

I have a 1991 Hunter 28. The boat does not have a pedestal guard and I would like to add one. I have noticed that most 28 Hunters have a pedestal guard that attaches to the base of the pedestal instead of the cockpit floor.( It also atteches just below the binnicle). Does anyone know what company makes this pedestal guard and where I could purchase one? I checked with Edson and they did not make it. Eric

Eric: You probably have one of the last Merriman Y/S made. This is just about the time they closed up shop. I think you will find that the mounting plate from Edson will work. Then you just get the type of guard that you want. You may need to have some custom fabrication done if you do not want to bolt it to the cockpit sole. Mine was made this way too on our H'31 ('85)

Eric: If/when you decide to do this, you will need to remove the control head. The mounting plate needs to be mounted below the control arms (throttle & trans lever). Some have tried to mount them below the compass and NOT below the control arms. The levers may come into contact with the mounting plate if this is not done properly. You also need to decide if you want one with 9" or 12" centers (that is the spread). Ours in 9" on our Merriman Y/S. I think that you will find that they had to use the wider spread to clear the pedestal mount on the cockpit sole on some boats. If you are attaching the legs to the pedestal instead of the sole this is no something that you need to worry about.

Hi Eric, I installed a pedestal guard on our...

1989 H28, bought it from WM. It screws to the cockpit sole along with a bracket that mounts to the pedestal. WM catalog calls it the straight guard, model 486012. Worked great on our H28. Used it to mount a teak cockpit table and binocular holder. One thing, the plates used to mount it to the sole comes with through bolts, which means you would need to cut a hole in the liner from the aft bunk. I opted to use SS screws and they seemed to hold just fine. When/if you use screws pre-drill the hole larger than the screw shank, but slightly smaller than the threads. There is a metal plate embedded in the sole for re- inforcement and the screws need to cut through. Terry
