Hi,
Does anyone have a plan to built a pedestal
guard out of wood incorporating a wooden table.
This is for 1984 Hunter that I recently bought and making improvements.
Thx RZ

I've followed/participated on these forums for about 6-7 years now ... don't recall seeing any discussion about pedestal guard construction from wood. Can't see why it isn't a viable alternative to the usual SS tubing. You likely will need to resort to your own creativity! Wood needs to be teak or IPE (common decking material similar to teak for weather/rot resistance) if you want a good appearance.

Strength, size and durability are likely the deciding factors favoring the use of SS tubes. An adequately strong pedestal made out of wood could be kind of bulky for the limited space in the average cockpit. The amount of maintenance required might also be of considerartion. Another minor consideration is that most of the accesories that sailors attach to the pedestal come standart with tubing mounts. On a cost basis it would depend on the type of wood used and a good durable wood might be more expensive than SS.
