I had to have a throttle cable replaced this summer and my Knot meter stopped working after the repair. Cannot take the boat back to the service company, because they are 30 miles away. I discovered that the cable got pinched when the pedestal was re-assembled. Now I need to disassemble the pedestal to repair the cord. Is this a reasonably simple task or am I getting in over my head?

Reasonably simple in approach, but sometimes a bit frustrating doing the actual job. The compass has to be removed and since I do not know what kind of compass you have, cannot comment on that procedure, but usually it is a matter of removing 4 bolts or screws. After you pull the compass you can see how the rest of the pedestal top goes together. Usually 4 long bolts that hold the housing for the shift and tranny cable assemblies.

Sounds easy enough. My compass slips over the pedestal.

The Y/S Merriman pedestal has a clip that has a screw to secure it in place. The screw is located on the forward side of the pedestal tube. You need to loosen this clip to remove the cable housing (one side is the transmission the other is the throttle). Then the other ends of the hosing are secured on the motor for the throttle and the transmission.

Steve is nearly always right when it come to h31s, but on mine the screw is on the aft side of the pedestal. How did the throttle cable get messed up fixing a knot meter?. Be very careful backing out the screw! Don't back it out more than 1/4" inch before looking to make sure you have enough slack to adjust the cable or you'll lose the screw and clamp.

It was actually the wire that connects the knot meter to the paddle. It was crushed when the pedestal was re-assembled. So the wire was grounded out and would not read. I as able to take the top part of the pedestal apart and repair the wire. Was not as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for the suggestions.

Mark, info .. on this site, go to "boat info" then "downloads General Info" and click on that.. there is a Merriman catalog that has the parts diagrams and other info on your steering pedestal..

Scott thanks for the correction. I haven't owned the boat for 6+ years.

Good news. I was able to get the top of the pedestal apart and repaired the wire. When the throttle cable was repaired, the knot meter wire was pinched when the pedestal was re-assembled. This caused the wire to be grounded out, pedestal to bare crushed knot meter wire. Once I pulled the wire and re-taped it problem solved.
