All,
Just bought a 1995 Beneteau Oceanis 400. As I am going through the boat, there is a foot pedal under the sink that sticks out slightly. For the life of me I can't figure out the purpose of the pedal and can't seem to identify the mechanism it is connected to. Nothing in the owners manual as well.

Anyone out there with a similar boat who can advise on:
1. Function
2. Use
3. Operation

Much appreciated.

1. A water pump, either for fresh tank water, or whatever water you are floating on. It SHOULD be working via a thru-hull shutoff. Foot pumps use less water than the faucet.
2. Step on it.
3. Take your foot off. Might take a few steps to prime the pump.

It is a foot pump. There is a seacock under the sink that needs to be opened before using the pump and make sure the little tube at the back of the sink is over one of the sink bowls and then pump away. This pump doesn't pull water from your fresh water tanks, its the same water your sailing in...it a way to conserve your fresh drinking water when doing the dishes.

The one on my boat empties water from the ice box. The galley sink should drain freely without pumping.

I agree with Robfmcc. It most likely is a water pump, if you have two faucets going to the sink. For it to work, you will have to open the through hull. My boat has a three way valve so I can pull salt water from where I'm at or switch to fresh water from my tank. Lanter points out it may be a drain pump for the ice box. Could be, mine's electric. Trace your lines and see where they go. If you have an icebox, put some water in it and see if you can pump it out.

I'm with robfmcc on this one.

If your galley has foot pump at the floor level and an additional spout above the sink, then you have auxiliary water supply for rinsing dishes. Water is drawn from whatever your boat is floating in. Mine pumps on both the up and down stroke.

I have a '93 400. As stated above, the foot pump pumps the water you're sailing in into the sink via the small faucet on your sink. Re the icebox pump, you probably have a valve in your "pump house" that switches the bilge pump between bilge and icebox.

I hope you mean WASH the dishes in sea water, then RINSE with clean water? People on the open ocean might get get away with doing both... but around "the continent"? Yuck.
