Pebble Beach Boats

I've been watching the AT&T golf tourney at Pebble Beach. Every so often they show some sailboats on cradles sitting on a dock in a line. 2 Questions: What the three that appear to be the same design. And how do they launch them? The dock appears to be pretty high but the cameras don't stay on them that long.

The Pebble Beach website mentions "regatta sailing" as a possible Team Building exercise, but little else. A photo on the site shows what looks like a J/boat and some possible Catalinas on the pier. Google Maps shows two boats, covered, on the pier, but it does not look like there is a hoist to launch them. Perhaps they bring in a crane and haul them for the winter?

They are dry sailed, notice the davit arm on the right side of the pier. The arm it self points down the pier. Its a pale greenish color.

They are relatively low in freeboad like many of the J’s. They look to small for the J 29 and too large for the J22. The keels look a bit old fashioned and don’t appear to be that deep. I thought the most forward on I saw could be an Olson 30. They have outboards (The three that look the same).
In Dave’s first picture the yellow hull in the left background might be the one I’m seeing on the dock on TV.
2nd photo shows a masthead rig - if it’s even the same boat. The hoist is clearly visible but it’s not clear to me how they lift the hull off the cradle unless the hoist arm telescopes.

The boats are on trailers. The boat is brought up to the davit, the arm swings over the companionway and the chain fall connects to a strap on the keelboats. The boat is lifted enough to clear the trailer and the trailer is removed. The arm with the boat suspended is then swung 180° and the boat lowered into the water. The silhouette of the trailer can be seen on the right hand boat.

That is Stillwater Cove, Pebble Beach. We used to take our annual Blue Water cruise down there from Alameda. It was a great anchorage in the summer. It's well protected from the usual north westerly wind and swells. We would go ashore and barbeque right on the beach, then the kids could collect driftwood and we'd make a bonfire. The stairs up the cliff gave access to Pebble Beach where they had to allow us to walk around on the pathways. We always had a fun time there. Lots of seals and otters. The downside was the kelp beds that would clog the head intake. You had to select your anchoring spot carefully. I believe if memory serves me that those boats on the pier are Mercurys. During the summer they were in the water on private moorings. Once the wind and waves started consistently coming from the south during the winter they were moved ashore. #StuJackson did you ever go there? It is popular with Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and Monterey sailors. Here are photos from our first trip in 1991.

I don't think they are Santana 22's because the boats seen on TV during the golf tournament are masthead rigs and as far as I can tell the Santana 22 is fractional.
It is Stillwater Yacht Club. From their web site I couldn't see more than a few boats. It is winter there. The resort has two pools, a tennis facility and of course dining options. Alll lovely on a beautiful shorefront venue.
I just don't get why 4 boats on a pier makes a yacht club. Maybe there's a parking lot full of boats I can't see but I don't get launching a handful of boats from a pier, with a fairly expensive crane system makes any sense.
There's a big storm coming in - will those boats be left on the pier?

These guys seem to think the Santana 22 is masthead-rigged :SANTANA 22 - sailboatdata
It would seem that they have the hoist for launching the Santanas, the Mercurys, and the Flying Juniors (FJ's) that the club owns. Photos on the club's website also show dinghies on the pier, which might be stored elsewhere over the winter. A keelboat like the Santana 22 is not likely to blow off the pier, but the trailers they're on would be easy enough to move in the case of a storm. Google Earth shows what could be an ample drysail area and launching ramp along with about a dozen moorings as well. The 30' Shields they also race at the club are probably not drysailed. Our club would not appear very active in winter either, with just four or five boats in the slips.

Those guys would know. I think I found Santana 22 on a google search and maybe the boat depicted wasn’t really a Santana 22.
Anyhow I learned that the S 22 was designed by Gary Mull the designer of my Ranger 29 (And they look similar underwater) and built by Shock. The builder of the Santana 30/30, a boat I’ve sailed on a bit and met the builder (Or his son - I’m not sure) at Put in Bay on Lake Erie in the early ’80’s.
But it’s time to throw in the towel on this.
