My p 26 (new to me) has Very rusty keel bolt nuts and the forward edge of the hull to keel joint was poorly patched with black caulking...this led me to prepare to drop the keel, rebed, and install new keel bolts, thinking that she must have a leak.I have removed 4 of 8 bolts and they are in great shape.....now I am wondering if I should leave well enough alone and just install new bolts and nuts or go for the gusto and go the whole way......any words of wisdom would be appreciated.I also would like opinions on the best bolt material to use on the cast iron keel.... For those doing this sort of repair I did not want to damage the area around the bolt so used a mechanical nut splitter that worked like a charm!!

Dave Thanks for those sites, both of which I have spent lots of time on...great info, but, apart from bolt supplier, they don't quite answer my question as to dropping the keel or not,and can I use stainless bolts? thanks again Ian

Ian4781, I'm in the same boat as you with rusty keel bolts in a 76 p26. For the bolts you replaced, did you drive the bolts through? How did you do it? Did you cut off the top of the nut with bolt first? If you drove them through, did you cut around the keel where the bolt head is first? And if so, what did you fill in the hole with? Thanks in advance.
